Do You Know About the 14-Day Rule?

If you’ve been involved in an auto accident here in the Sunshine State, it’s essential that you seek care right away. That’s because our state legislature put in place a rule which is now implemented in all auto insurance policies. Many people don’t know about it, so we want you to be informed. Here it is in a nutshell:

Following an auto accident, you have 14 days to see a physician or chiropractor to get evaluated. If you don’t do that within that 14-day window, then your coverage closes down. You will not be able to use your coverage for injury care.

Whiplash Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Man holding his neck after auto accident. While people who have been involved in a major auto accident will be taken to the hospital immediately, others who experience mild whiplash from a fender bender often put off seeking care.

They don’t feel the effects right away but will later that day or in the following days. Individuals will likely feel sore and stiff and lose range of motion.

They may self-treat their soft tissue damage at home by taking hot showers, getting massages and taking ibuprofen. What often happens is they do that for 15 days and realize they’re still in pain.

The problem is they didn’t seek care within that 14-day window, so they have no coverage to get treated. Unfortunately, their problems are just going to get worse over time.

Schedule an Evaluation Right Away

We tell patients that if you have an accident but don’t think you’re hurt badly see a doctor as soon as possible for an evaluation. You may not even need care, but at least you’ve opened up a file documenting that you sought medical attention within that 14-day window. If you do need therapy or another type of care, your insurance will pay for it. You bought your insurance after all, so you want to take advantage of your coverage!

Your Post-Accident Appointment at Kirkman Chiropractic

Here’s what you can expect when you come into our practice following an auto accident:

Consultation
You will meet with one of our chiropractors. We will discuss your history, any other health issues you may have, your symptoms and the nature of the accident. Different types of accidents result in various forms of injuries.

Examination
Next, we will do an examination. Orthopedic and neurologic tests will be performed. We will then provide a chiropractic evaluation to determine where any injuries may be present. Your nerves and muscles will be checked as well as your range of motion. If necessary, we will take X-rays of the areas of concern. We can take these on-site.

Follow-Up Appointment
It’s always crucial to schedule a follow-up visit. When you return, your chiropractor will sit down with you and go over your exam findings. We then will put together a plan of care for you to get you back to where you were, pre-accident.
